Brookfield East High School is proud to announce that 14 of its students have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.
More than 1.2 million juniors from approximately 20,000 high schools entered this year’s National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). More than 16,000 students nationwide were named semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.
The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955, recognizes academically talented students and provides semifinalists the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth about $24 million.
The semifinalists from Brookfield East High School are:
- Jane E. Bagby
- Hrishid Bala Balachandran
- Maxwell P. Bartelme
- Stephanie B. Corley
- Charles J. Cornell
- Akshara Kommana
- Matthew Lin
- Treasure K. Linton
- Tressa F. McManus

To advance to Finalist standing, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes information about their academic record, school and community involvement, leadership, employment, honors and awards. Students must also be endorsed by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their performance on the qualifying test.
More than 15,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level, with Finalists notified in February. Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April 2027.
